Hello, I am just finishing up my Junior year in CS/Math. I am just now starting to get a feel for the different type of programming positions there are. I now see that it's Systems Programming that interests me, and not Applications Programming.

I enjoy learning about algorithm analysis, data structures, computer architecture, parallel programming, etc... -- but I've been under the impression to get a job I need to focus on things like C#, Java, Web Services, User Interfaces, etc...

So, with that in mind, I'm asking for advice. My school is definitely more applications programming focused -- but it's too late for me to switch to a different school. What can I learn over the summer and throughout next year to make my chances of getting this type of job? We're willing to move if we need to.

And my second question is, I am intending on volunteering this summer for 4 hours a day, but it's more applications oriented work. Would it be more beneficial for me to use that type to learn more/work on projects?

Thank you for your advice,

David

If the across the board developers are being laid off these days, ask yourself am I independently wealthy or do I need a paycheck? If it's money you are after go with the flow. Under the Obama administration the new format for health records will be standardized. There's a crap load of money to be made in that field, run don't walk!

I will have to think about that; you're right -- my job is not my life, it is a means to an end. I'm curious, what is your exact recommendation? A new career, or a new focus within the one I'm currently pursuing?
