Hi,
When you say that you can't connect as you did in the past, are you
referring exclusively to Windows Update or you can't connect to any site?
- Have you set up your Internet connection parameter properly?
- Is your network card working (icon in systray)?
- Have you installed NVidia software for your motherboard?
The latter one tends to install the NVidia firewall which usually screwes up
your Internet connection.

So you click Start, Programs, Windows Update and then the error shows up?
Does the error show any detail (description, error number, etc.)?
I am not sure whether Windows Update page uses Java or not but it will not
hurt to install it.
Download the 32-bit (yes, 32-bit) version of Java from here:
http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp
You need the 32-bit one because the default IE is 32-bit.
