A programme I use for generating maps got into a loop and started eating up
the memory. When I tried to stop it with Task Manager, by accessing the Image
name in the Processes tab, nothing happened. I even logged off and logged on
again and the process was still running. I could only kill it by shutting
down the computer. This was a repeatable error - I did the same activity
using the programme again, and again it locked up and couldn't be stopped
with Task Manager. I also tried running Task Manager as Administrator but
that didn't help either.

The programme is a 32 bit application and I'm running it on XP x64.

Is there a problem with x64 here? How can one stop a process if Task Manager
doesn't do it?

Try using taskkill from a command prompt.
Type taskkill /? for help on its usage.
