DMA 40-pin/80-Wire with a empty spot on one wire?

On some DMA 40-pin/80-wire cable, there is a hole on one wire at one
end of the cable. What's the purpose? Is this a newer design than
the same DMA 40-pin/80-wire cable with no hole on it?

Yup. Sometimes it's implemented by pulling the contact out of the connector
on that wire--same result but it's much more difficult to tell by
inspection.
