I realize this is off-topic, but I've been having an insanely difficult
time trying to find a job. Even with my A+ cert, 5+ years
help-desk/network Admin/windows Admin experience, and a
government-issued security clearance from my former service in the Army,
I'm still having trouble. I'd prefer a job working help-desk/network
Admin/windows Admin, but I'd take pretty much anything (cabling, bank
teller, anything...).

I've been searching Monster, HotJobs, and CareerBuilder, but nobody is
taking the bait. If anybody has any suggestions, or knows of any jobs in
the SE Michigan area (Detroit/Ann-Arbor, etc..), please let me know.

Hey Rainman, I'm in Grand Rapids...

Have you ever thought about State Employment?
There may be some jobs in MDIT, I hear they are understaffed in the Detroit
area.

http://www.michigan.gov/mdcs/0,1607,...056---,00.html

When I tried the links to the job openings this morning all where down,
maybe they are updating the job listing and it will be available later
today.

Good Luck.

I'm having the same luck as you trying to find another job right now
near Detroit. I mean, I currently have one I've been in for 5 years,
but am making a crappy salary and want to make more money. I've sent
out 12 résumés in the last month and haven't gotten a call for a
single interview. How depressing. I hate to say it, but leaving the
state may be the only viable option here. Michigan is the absolute
worst state to find a job in now.

I just got another job 2 weeks ago after searching since the end of
January of this year. I didn't get one call until the end of May and
then I got 4 calls in a period of two weeks! Maybe it was the market,
maybe it was the changes in my resume, who knows!

Here are some tips:

Freshen up your resume. Have people online critique it. I did so at
www.experts-exchange.com and got some good tips including:

- Keep it brief and to the point
- Put a list of achievements on top of the resume
- Show off your certifications with a few logos (like the A+ logo)
- If you have a decent web site, tag it to your contact information
- List your salary requirements as OPEN

Make sure you are using good quality bond paper and matching envelopes
for resumes and cover letters.

Freshen up your references. I had one system administrator, one PC
Tech and one guy that worked at IBM for my references.

After the interview (assuming you got one), send a thank you card to
all the people you met with. Ask for business cards during the
interview.

Check out this web site for job sites:

All great tips. My wife is an HR manager for a large corp., and she
would add this:

Keep it to ONE page. Many HR folks have to go through hundreds of
resumes, and often don't look at a second page. The first page would
have to show you walking on water to get a look at the second.

Make sure you check with your references to confirm their willingness
to be contacted now... having talked with them a year ago isn't good.

What was cool is that while working my last job, one of my references
was sitting about 10 feet across from me and the other 7 feet behind
me! So I got to keep in close contact with them on a daily basis. I
even got to listen to a voice mail from one of the companies I applied
to asking how good I was, hehehe.

I haven't been able to do that for years...too much history.

I fixed that. I just quit putting anything past the last 10 years in mine.
The stuff before that doesn't matter that much. My 5 years as a painter
don't have that much to do with how well I can fix a computer.

Unfortunately I have no references at this time because I'm currently
employed and have been at the same place for several years. As such
I've lost contact with anyone I used to know in other companies. I
dare not give my current coworkers/employer as a reference right now
because if they were called I'd be canned for sure for searching for
another job. I wish I could find some way around this problem.

I worked in broadcasting for over 17 years, for Canada's national
broadcaster, the CBC...that alone takes up half a page, as I worked
about 8 different technical positions, and for some of them the
specific duties are not obvious from the job title.
