Default Partition Information (Logical)

I have a quick question about partitions. Is a primary partition
considered a logical drive? I have a XP Pro machine and 1 primary
partition and one logical. I thought that you could have 1 primary with
4 extended or 4 primarys. So why can I have 1 primary and 1 logical??
Could anyone clear this concept about partitions for me. I know that
the primary partition is usesd to boot the machine (system partition)
and its also the active partition? And that you can make logical
partitions from extended partitons, but I didn't understand that I
could make a logical partiton without first creating an extended
partition. Any help will gladly taken.

Matt

I think this is correct:

You can have up to 4 primary partitions but only 1 extended. So you
could do 1 Primary and 0 Extended
1 Primary and 1 Extended
2 Primary and 0 Extended
2 Primary and 1 Extended etc...... all the way to
3 Primary and 1 Extended or 4 Primary and 0 Extended

Within the extended partition you can create as many logical drives as
there are available drive letters ie. around 22 on a normal system.

To sum up - logical drives all reside on a single extended partition.

Not quite true. See the following:
