I feel your pain. The most important thing you can do right now, is to
try and accept your situation as it is. Next, backup any important data
on that 80 gig. You may or may not be able to access that 40 gig drive,
but for right now, keep your expectations very low as far as data
recovery.
In my repair business, I don't even do a bench-check on a computer unless
the customer has done a back-up of thier important data (files pictures
etc). This may seem a lttle over-the-top as far as making sure my butt
is covered, but I can assure you, that murphys law is very prevalent in
the world of computer repair.
I'm curious, is the computer either a HP or Compaq?
The most important thing you can do right now, is to try and develop some
acceptance of your situation.
After you have had a chance to get things hashed-out in the next few
days, see if there is a upgrade for the BIOS in your computer.
Beyond that, see what you can do to get some type of back-up system in
place, whether cdr, online back-up, GHOST, whatever, so that you can have
peace of mind in the future.
And allways remember, It's not a matter of if, but WHEN, when it comes
to disasters like this.
Wish ya luck
