By upgrading to XP maybe that put to much strain on the CPU. I had this
problem and it was the CPU couldn't handle the win modem. I put a hardware
modem in the machine and have not had a problem since. I had tried three
other brands of win modems in this machine before I came up with the true
modem. Try a modem that is Linux Compatible.
