Have a Dell PC with windows 98, purchased apprx 3 years
ago. Worked pretty well until a few months ago. Then it
all began to fall apart. Now when I start up I get a
message "This program has performed an illegal operation
and will be shut down. If problem persists, contact the
program vendor." Two action buttons follow. If I click
on "Close" another message appears: "Microsoft Visual C++
Runtime error. Pure Visual Memory R6025."
If I click on the Details Button, a list of the technical
faults appears; i.e. "LSASS caused an invalid page fault
in module LSASS.EXE at 015f:004440eabb.

When I sign on it takes about 3 or 4 minutes to establish
conact with thr web via my service prrovider, Earthlink.
When I do, the computer has a tendency to "freeze" and all
too often, the only way I can shut down is with the power
buton. The Ctrl-Alt-DEL shut down merthod works about half
the time. The rest of the time I get another Windows
mwssage "A fatal exception )E gas occurred at

application will be terminated.
Press any key to terminate the current applicaion.
Press CTRL=ALT=DEL again to restart your computer. You
will lose any unsaved information in all applications.
Press any key to continue."
I have absolutely no idea as to what it all means except
perhaps I should shoot the PC to terminate its misery but
I can't afford a new one aaand even if I coul, I'm pushing
80 and am reluctsnt to buy another that I may use only
weeks or days. I'd rather leave the money to my widow and
grandchildren.
Can anyone suggest how I can extend the useul life of my
Deell PC?

Process File: lsass or lsass.exe
Process Name: Local Security Authority Service
Description: Windows Local Security Authority Server Process handles Windows
security mechanisms. It verifies the validity of user logons to your
computer or server. Technically, the software generates the process that is
responsible for authenticating users for the Winlogon service.
Company: Microsoft Corp.
System Process: Yes
Security Risk ( Virus/Trojan/Worm/Adware/Spyware ): No
Common Errors: N/A

Are you sure you're running windows 98? Everything I've found for that file
indicates its a windows NT/2000/XP file. I've also found references on that
file for domain authentication errors, IIS errors and Exhange server errors.
Also is that the exact error message word for word? I can't find anything
on "Pure Visual Memory R6025", but I did find "r6025 pure virtual function
call". If the last one is what you're really getting, try going into safe
mode (you get there by tapping F8 on start up, before the windows spash
screen) and uninstall Norton systemworks. Also go to
Start->Programs->Startup and delete everything in there.

I agree with reformatting the drive. It sounds like the OS is corrupt.

Those who suggest "reformatting the drive" are either amateurs or
just malicious -- likely both.

There is ZERO reason to format over such problems -- especially
before you have tried the options at your disposal for repair.

Even if you re-install the OS (one aggressive option) there is no reason
to reformat and lose your data.

I am not a 98 expert so I cannot rattle of the list of 98 troubleshooting
steps but they are easy to find on the web, at Microsoft and other sites.

Start with looking into the machine and user profiles.

Herb the guy is 80 years old, he needs outside help.
Formatting is always a viable option for MS corruption
issues that are unable to be fixed with minor/major
surgery.

He's looking for a diagnosis. First try the reinstall of the OS
(Win9. That's minor or medium sugery and may very well fix the
problem. Be sure to run windows updates after that. (Why not call a
grandkid in to help with all that? I'm sure it'll be a terrific
learning and bonding experience!) If that fails, back up your personal
files, documents, etc before doing the reformat.

But I think either reinstalling the OS and/or Norton should go a long
way to help resolve most of the problems. Possibly remove and reinstall
your ISP software too (be sure you jot down the connection settings, ID,
& password first).

No, formatting is NOT ever a viable option for such issues -- with the
possible
exception of the worst virus infestations.

It is mean and malicious --or just plain stupid-- to tell anyone that and if
you
cannot help you should leave him be.

It is at the very best the suggestion of a rank amateur and anyone who makes
it would need to convince others that he or she is really that misinformed
and not
playing an evil practical joke on an unsuspecting person who had merely
asked
for help.

Herb apparently has not dealt with Windows 98 (which he plainly admitted). Unless you would like to go line by line through the Windows Registry, a reinstall is the only logical fix. If the user reinstalls over top of his current installation, he should not loose any data files. He will need to reinstall his programs, but the data will be saved

Unfortunately, this is common for Windows 98. It also is not the "immoral" solution you make it out to be. He will be fine.
