I have a simple network between two computers both Windows 2000 one a
desktop and one a laptop. When I connect to the shares from either to
either it is asking me for a password and a username, when I enter my logon
name and password I get access. I have never seen this at school or work,
both networked environments. What is causing it to request a password?

Sup Adam,

I think what is happening is when you are at work or
school, your computers are connected to a server or
workgroup and all the computers have already been
authenticated.

When you connect two computers for the first time,
authentication is required. After that is done, you won't
see the log on screen pop up again, unless you shutdown
both computers and try to access the shares again.

Thanks all-
I realize that I wasn't thinking. I realize that the two computers were set
up in a workgroup network so I installed an eval copy of 2000 advanced
server ran dcpromo, installed active directory and voila now I have a domain
which is what I wanted in the first place.

In a workgroup environment (Win2k), to not be asked for
username & password to access shares (though I don't
recommended this), both computers need to have the same
username & password.

Are they in the same workgroup/domain? How do you have the
Rights setup. Start at the beginning and work your way
through it. You will find it very quickly.
