I'm currently trying to go through the MCDBA path. I've only just started and
I'm still studying for my MCP. At the moment as I can't get an entry level IT
job so I've managed to get myself a callcentre job providing tech support for
an ISP.
The reason I am posting is because of an experience I've had today which
contradicts my understanding of DNS servers. The guy was online but couldn't
open web pages. One of the 1st line checks I have to do is try the alternate
DNS servers. Before I did this I thought I'd check to see if they're the
problem by getting the customer to type the IP address of any site into his
browser. I confirmed that the address opened the site with my browser but it
didn't work for him. I still had to get him to change the DNS servers though
and when I did, to my surprise it worked. Why does the IP address fail? I
thought the IP address checked to see if it was a dns issue. This has left me
feeling bamboozled.
