Hello everyone,

I'm studying for test 70-271. I'm A+ certified and have my NT 4.0 certs.
I'm trying to do a little updating now..and I'm a bit rusty.

I'm in Chapter 5 of the MS press book...about ntfs permissions..and then
supporting shared folders. Here is my question.

What is the difference? I find this sooo confusing. Can anyone tell me
what the difference is between NTFS permissions...folder...and Shared
folders? I need a brain jog!! Ahhh!
Thanks.

Wait..wait!!! Typing that made my brain wake up! But...if you have any
advice on how to keep the permissions straight...on the two subjects...do
tell!
Thanks

HI Trish,

NTFS Rights are what are applied to the folder. Share Permissions are
applied (you guessed it!) to the Share, which is why if you have a folder on
drive C that is called c:\Directory that you are sharing as
\\computer\directory you can have different access when accessing it through
the drive as to accessing it by the share, even though they are the same
files.

Hope that clears it up

Hi Trish,

The way I keep NFTS versus share permissions straight is by telling myself
that share permissions are network assess permissions and NTFS permission
are for the person sitting at the machine. I then try to remember that I
give access across the network and take them away at the desktop. That helps
me remember that NTFS permissions that are more restrictive than the share
permissions override the share permissions but I can never have more access
than I was given via the share.

When looking at the Windows security model think about the path of how you
get there, because the Share-Permissions and the NTFS-Permissions work hand
ind hand as follows:
First look at the access control list of the Share and add all the
permissions of all the groups you are a member of. Those are your effective
Share-Permissions. Think of it as the Pipeline you are coming through: You
will never have more access than the share you are using gives you.
Now look at the access control list of the Folder (or File) you want to
access and add all the permissions of all the groups you are a member of.
Those are your effective NTFS-Permissions.
If these give you more permissions than the Share-Permissions, the
NTFS-Permissions are ignored.
If the NTFS-Permissions are more restrictive than the Share-Permissions,
NTFS-Permissions win.

Hope that helps,
