How does Browsing History work?

I have it set to keep history for two days, but there are links/pages
from about one month ago showing in the history drop down menu list. At
the same time, it is missing pages from earlier today or yesterday.
Firefox is set to delete Private Data when closed, but there Browsing
History is unchecked.

Seems to be some a similar problem with the address box drop-down list.

Firefox 3.0.4
Windows XP SP3
