Yeah, it probably errs on the side of caution. I know that I've uploaded
cropped photos to sites for printing and been warned that the resolution
was now too low for a satisfactory print, but gone ahead anyway and the
print was acceptable; not great, but acceptable.

I have a D80 (which I love). For those who are concerned about learning to
use all the features: I started out using it just like a P&S. Of course, I
would not have put all that money into it if that is how I intended using
it. The point is, a new user can simply use the "auto" setting--just like
P&S cameras--and then gradually learn to use other features.
