looking for a free(?) hdd/ata password utility

can anyone link me to a free dos ata password utility. e.g.: atapwd 1.2? (i
already have v1.1)

(this is for a pc...not for xbox)

Version 1.2 is a little hard to find as a standalone, but it's included on
any recent version of Hiren's CD (which is widely available on the
torrents, web, etc.) Let me know if you have any further trouble getting
it and I'll post it.

There is a much more powerful alternative to ATAPWD and that's MHDD
(version 4.6 or 4.5). Its power makes it easy to shoot yourself in the
foot, but you can do a lot of low level stuff including messing with the
ATA passwords. You can find it at:

Thanks! I just tried out MHDD4.6 and I agree...it looks like a foot killer,
for sure.

If you still want ATAPWD v1.2 the site I downloaded it from back in the
mists of time still has it:

Yeah, it's on an xbox site but's for the PC. (The program is getting
pretty long in the tooth, though - 2002!)

shops have figured out how to bypass the ATA password mechanism and release
a drive - and even recover the data! - from a password-locked drive. Not
free but not that expensive and well worth it if, say, you come into
possession of a notebook with an "accidentally" locked drive
