medion laptop issue

I am having serious problems with a laptop, i.e I cannot get it to boot.
The laptop is a Medion 2310 running Vista home basic.
When I turn it on I get the following message

"PXE-E61 media test failure - check cable"

"PXE-M0F: Exiting intel PXE ROM
operating system not found.

Upon entering BIOS settings, it says there is no HDD found....

Now, this is my daughters laptop and yesterday she was uninstalling a lot of
programmes, files etc rather carelessly it seems. I'm aware that this PXE
message is somewhat generic, but does anyone have any advice on what I
should check next?

TIA

This issue is often caused by either an incorrect setting in BIOS or a bad
boot device, such as a bad hard disk drive.

Yes, I know. It just seems coincidental that the HDD should fail after a
clear out rather than for any other reason on a machine thats only 8 months
old!
I wonder why.....
When trying to load the recovery disc, I'm being asked to load the HDD
driver...where would I find that? And is it even possible that it was
deleted anyway?

If it was me i'd take the battery out then plug the laptop in and see if the
hard drive shows up in the bios.

I'll have to get back to you on this one. This is a tough one even for me.
I'll get back to you on this one. Smack the bottom of the laptop in the middle
and keep trying to boot it and see if it works.

I bit the bullet and opened the case. HDD had slipped out of socket, boots
now.

Good job you diagnosed the problem before leaping in with the "recovery
disk" else you would have been in here asking how to recover all the
data the recovery disk deleted.

Now as the unit is under warranty I suggest you speak to the supplier
and ask them why the drive should have come out of its socket and what
remedy they have for this failure.
