I have a laptop with a wireless card, I want to set it up such that when I
use it at home and work I can have different IP's when i connect to home and
work. I have been told that hardware profiles can do that however when i
setup the hardware profiles, one for home, one for work. the wireless card
still holds ONE IP address regardless of which profile i choose. Am I
missing anything out?

Set the card to optain IP address automatically (DHCP). Then whatever
network you connect to you will automatically get an IP Address (if the
network has a DHCP server such as your router at home or DHCP server at
work).
