KDE4 - anyone happily using it ?

Hi all...Just wondering if any KDE4 users are enjoying the experience.

It was one of the things I was looking forward to in last weeks Ubuntu
Hardy release but it's a major disappointment.

Konqueror crashes if you sneeze while using it.
Dolphin is a featureless substitute for a file manager.

Plasma truly truly truly sucks. I appreciate there are valid reasons for
Kicker being superceded but Plasma truly sucks. And there's talk of it
not being suck-less until KDE Version 4.4

Manual editing of config files (!!!) to get a clean desktop. (You what?)

I know it's pretty ungrateful of me to complain about free software but I
now know how those Windows "power users" feel when they come to Linux and
fall flat on their faces. They moan about everything, blame everything
but their own shortcomings and flounce off back to Windows. I'm doing
pretty much the same thing cos I've downgraded back to my highly
personalised KDE 3.5.9 setup and am happy once again.

Anyone else having fun using it?

Regards
Lodi

Was it the default installation? Even the KDE developers agree it's still a
work in progress--I'm surprised Ubuntu would inflict it on users without
asking.

I'm not sure if it's the default for Kubuntu as I use Ubuntu with the KDM
desktop manager (or the K Desktop Manager to be precise).

After I upgraded to Hardy via the Update Manager the options of "KDE
(previous)" and "KDE4" were listed on my log-in screen.

Ah. So you still have the choice of KDE 3.5.x? My advice is to avoid KDE
4.0.x for serious work--use it only to try out. I think the developers are
aiming for 4.1 to be the first full-featured release.

I'm quite happy with the previous version ... and why would anyone use
version 0.9 (or even 1.0.0 ) of anything ?
Was there some 'gee whiz' thing you were expecting ?

Not so. Application crashes don't take down the OS as well tho ... tho to be
fair I haven't seen that in the windows arena since XP.

According to this
<http://www.kde.org/announcements/announce-4.1-alpha1.php>, KDE 4.1 is
the "first end-user release" of KDE 4.x. If you're feeling brave, you might
like to give the alpha version a try...

I thought the same thing myslef when i saw Dolphin.
The fedora 9 package GUI tool is similar .. its featureless , some lame
rip off of the old xandros package manager.

Getting Twin-view setup via a simple GUI still seems beyond the
programming skills of those involved, never mind changing the primary
screen over. Depending on if you use the old version or new version of
KDE this simple task becomes a mind ****.

Dynamic resolution of desktop ... something windows users have been
doing for over a decade using just a few mouse clicks.

You now get all sorts of beeps and whistles on various errors & use, can
anyone say so windows3.1

Easy to use Firewall but its all command line ... that's a seller lol

New pulse audio ... but its hardly supported yet.

If you thought VISTA was released due to a idiotic schedule when core
components of the code were barely BETA level and 6 months behind each
other. You will die laughing at this mess that the Linux community is
going to dish out over the next few months.

Biggles watches them all flounce back to XP...................

PS: good on you LODI btw .. at least someone has the balls to stand up
and call it for the crap it is.

Biggles ...
