Don't know that this is the correct newsgroup. I am working on setting up a
wired network between my laptop and desktop computers. I am getting a Windows - System Error: There is an IP address conflict with another system on the network. What does this mean? What this means is that another machines (computer, printer, device) on your
network has the same IP Address. Mr. Smith |

Now what you want to ask is how to resolve this issue. 1st you need to know
if your network issue IP Addresses dynamically (DHCP) or what some would say "automatically gets an IP address we you power on. Or . does your network have only static addresses. If it's static you would want to make sure you're not attempting to use an address that is already in use by another machine (i.e. computer, WiFi access point, printer, etc...). If your network is DHCP you would want to assure that your machine doesn't have the same MAC Address of another machine on the network. Mr. Smith |

Uh...
I'm running WindowsXP Pro on both machines and ran the network setup wizard. Both have the same Network name and different computer names and IDs. My Ethernet switch shows green for both connections. The icon in the taskbar shows connected. -- Charles Kenyon Word New User FAQ & Web Directory: http://addbalance.com/word Intermediate User's Guide to Microsoft Word (supplemented version of Microsoft's Legal Users' Guide) http://addbalance.com/usersguide See also the MVP FAQ: http://www.mvps.org/word which is awesome! --------- --------- --------- --------- --------- --------- This message is posted to a newsgroup. Mary Bly > > > At this point the Laptop looks good it is setup to receive its IP address from an DHCP server which in this case is 192.168.0.1 which I will assume is your router. However, the Desktop is setup for static IP address and is set for the wrong IP address, it is set for the same address as the router address, which is why you are getting the "System Error: There is an IP address conflict with another system on the network" error message. You have one of two options. 1. You can set the NIC properties for the Desktop PC to "Obtain an IP address Automatically", this will allow DHCP to do it's thing. Its setting for IP Address will then look some thing like the following, IP Address 192.168.0.19x where 'x' will more that likely be a 1, and the setting for Subnet Mask, Default Gateway, DHCP Server, DNS Servers, will be the same as that for the Laptop. or option number 2 Go in and choose "use the following IP Address" and manually set the following to: IP Address to 192.168.0.19 Subnet Mask 255.255.255.0 Default Gateway 192.168.0.1 DHCP Server 192.168.0.1 DNS Servers 192.168.0.1 Try these setting and get back to me, if this does not get you going then repost your new ipconfig setting using the same command as you previously use. -- Danny Kile Please reply to the Newsgroup ONLY "Dogs come when they're called, CATS take a message and get back to you." Oops, in my last post I left a one (1) off the IP address it should have
been: IP Address to 192.168.0.191 NOT IP Address to 192.168.0.19, although 192.168.0.19 would more that likely have gotten you going as well, however, I was trying to say consisted here. -- Danny Kile Please reply to the Newsgroup ONLY "Dogs come when they're called, CATS take a message and get back to you."
