I'll start by saying I'm pretty pc illiterate and only know the basics.
I'm self employed, rent an office, use my own Laptop and pay for my internet service but it comes thru a server to all people on my floor. I'm unable to get a dedicated line per owner...he doesn't want anymore cables coming into the building. Anyway not that I think anyone checks or even cares, but I don't want them knowing if I were to d/l a porn clip or borrow a song. Actually the traffic is just routed thru a std. computer not an actual server. Basically I need something that is easy to set up and I've been checking out this product: http://www.anonymizer.com/consumer/p...al_net_shield/ Can anyone tell me if it's a good product or something similar thats as good or better? Thank you! TBell |

Gary, You might consider wireless broadband. This can be in the form of a car that plops into your laptop computer or you can tether to your cell phone. Depending on your privder and the coverage at that specific building, speeds can be excellent. For instance, with AT&T Wireless, with my 3G capable phone, an unlimited data plan with tethering costs $60/month as an adder to voice line (although a separate line with a data card I think costs the same). Speeds are akin to DSL in all places I've been (including Cincinnati if the other poster's tech bully research is accurate) and speeds are on the order 1.3Mbps downloads. If you are an on the go sorta person as in real estate (again assuming the accuracy of the other post in this thread), you may find the internet-anywhere capabilities quite nice for passing the time at a dead open house, for instance. Whatever you try from a local provider, ask other people in the area. Coverage can vary especially in the terrain of Cincinnati, and you dont' want to be stuck with a 2 year contract for an unlimited data plan that either doesn't work at all or is frustratingly slow from teh location you do most of your work. Verizon would be one to consider. I have colleagues in the area there and Verizon cards are what they seem to prefer for their mobile peeps. Otherwise, to ensure privacy of your internet from inside the office there using the building's wired connection, a VPN service may be somethign to consider. You'd connect with a piece of client software (perhaps) to your third party VPN provider, and that link would be encrypted and therefore opaque to the prying eyes of any other renters in the building. Google up VPN service and there are tons of options. I dont' use such a service as I don't have your specific needs. Perhaps others can recommend a good one. I have used Steganos VPN for wireless access in public places, and it does the job, nobody on the same network should be able to see what you do online, you just download their software and there is no need to configure anything.
