On December 11th of 2007, NVIDIA released a new GPU with an old name to the ferociously hungry public. Carrying the year-old moniker “GeForce 8800 GTS,” the new part (based on G92 silicon) is built upon a 65nm process and sports 128 streaming processors, whereas the old part, the G80, was built on a 90nm process and had only 96 streaming processors. The data bus was also narrowed from 320 bits on the G80 to 256 bits on the G92. The accompanying memory changed as well, going from 640 or 320 MB on the old video cards to 512 MB on the new video cards. Apart from the physical changes, there were also logical changes. The GPU core speed was increased from 500MHz to 650MHz. The memory clock went from 1.6GHz DDR (800MHz actual) to 1.94GHz DDR (970 MHz actual). And finally, the streaming processors, also known as the shader core, saw a clock speed increase of 425MHz; from 1.2 GHz for the older video cards, to 1.625 GHz on the new parts.
