Uh...First, we must have the denials: http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?p...d=aQMGgh2LV_bU (As in, just because they COULD...) Although it does emphasize the story that Paramount/DW was actually *second* on Toshiba/MS's shopping list-- And that Paramount had only taken the Bribe after buying T/MS's slightly defective sales pitch of "Oh, sure, we're in negotiations with Warner right now, it's in the bag--Don't worry, you won't be alone, that new studio majority for HD should be along any day now..." The interesting question is why Warner switched and why now. My guess is that they looked at holiday and post-holiday sales figures and saw that Toshiba's player price offensive had failed to ignite HD DVD disc sales. At best, the format war would continue. That would be bad for the industry as a whole but especially for HD DVD, whose main advantage (cost) would be compressed to irrelevance as the technology on both sides matured. Neill Massello |

If anything, Blu-ray discs are often a little cheaper, despite their being (supposedly) more expensive to manufacture. Blu-ray players are still more expensive than HD, but the relative gap has been shrinking and the absolute prices of both formats have been declining, as is typical with new technology. > Any advantages worth paying for? Blu-ray has twice the capacity of HD. Not a big deal for movies, but an important consideration in picking the next generation of optical data storage. Neill Massello |
