They rely on the fact that it takes time to do it, and if you recompress
the music you'll lose fidelity.

You know that, I know that, and Apple knows that, but the suits at the
music publishers refuse to believe it.
Software piracy was a big problem long before the Internet was available.
No DRM system will ever stop peer-to-peer sharing, since it only needs
to be broken once to create a seed file, but it will stop a lot of
casual copying e.g. friends swapping music.
