Which reminded me of this article from 2001, when Apple announced plans
for their own chain of retail stores.

http://www.businessweek.com/magazine...1/b3733059.htm
"Sorry, Steve: Here's Why Apple Stores Won't Work"
"New retail outlets aren't going to fix Apple's sales"

Never trust an analyst. Apple now has 185 stores with more on the way,
and today announced their highest quarterly Mac sales ever. I can't say
how much the stores were responsible for it, but they sure as hell
aren't being run at a loss.

My limited understand of the Mac channel is the % for the retailer is
quite small (<10%), so with having a store, Apple gets to make another
decent percentage.

The analyst might well be right, though. In particular, is it that in
fact that the iPod took off and made life for the Apple stores easy? You
have to separate the two items....since the iPod made so much money it
might in actual fact be masking that Apple's stores would otherwise have
made a loss compared with Apple selling to retailer specialists....

Apart from iPods, Apple now have some very fine products again is it the
stores or the goods? it only has 180 stores....so limited coverage,
selling via a retailer may have actually sold more Apples overall...what
is the net benefit/effect?

regards

thing

I don't think there's any doubt that the iPod is a huge drawcard to get
people into the stores. Once they're in of course they get a chance to
see a Mac in a pleasant environment, with no chance of the salesdroid
trying to convince them to buy an HP because he'll get a higher
commission this week for one ;o)

Steve Jobs was sick of the treatment the Mac got at typical retail
outlets. Part of it's probably their own fault, as Apple doesn't offer
the sales incentives and kickbacks that most consumer electronics
companies offer, but the stereotypical big chain store that 'sold' Macs
had a bunch of PCs along a wall with one or two low-end Macs at the end,
often not going, and definitely with no software in sight. Opening their
own stores proved that it could be done right, attract new customers (
something like 50% of the Mac buyers in the Apple Stores are first-time
Mac buyers), and they could still run the stores at a profit even while
paying normal prices to Apple, Inc.
