Default Belkin 802.11G.

My mother in law just purchased an HP DV1175US Laptop with XP Pro. They
threw in a Belkin 802.11G wireless router. We will be using the existing
wireless connection off the laptop, unless it is recommended to use the
Belkin Wireless adaptor. The router has to be hooked up in the office which
is about 50 feet from where she will be using her laptop in the addition off
the house. The main house is stone, but the addition is stud and drywall.
It is a direct shot to the addition. Does anyone have any recommendations on
how to set this up so it is secure. Is this distance too far to work
efficiently? I am a wired man myself and have little or no experience with
wireless. I currently use Linksys and I am not familiar with the Belkin
line. I have no problem setting it up, but my question is are there any
special settings that should be applied? Should I disable the Quest account?
Should we look at a third party Firewall softwware instead of the Windows
SP2 Firewall? I know if it is a router so we should be somewhat safe. I
currently use Sygate personal firewall and I am wondering if I should go with
a third party and disable the Windows Firewall. Any input would be greatly
appreciated.

Thank you,
