I do the odd fixup of staff machines, usually it involves a blow it away and
reload with some sensible setup.

Got give a ladies HPa210a to sort out slow speed, it is full of crap and runs
like a dog. Now this machine has a recovery partition from which you can create
a set of factory recovery disks.

Having had issue with HP before where the OEM license on the sticker is only
good with there recovery disks not just any old OEM XP I decided to create the
recovery disks. Message on screen when running the program

You cannot make a recovery set you have already made one and you are only
allowed one set!!!

What a crock, no wonder I voted against HP getting our corporate supply of
hardware for desktops.

If it's not an old HP/Compaq then most likely there won't be anything left
to make recovery discs from once a set has been made already. It's meant to
need about 12 CDs. Hardly worth the stuffing round.

The HP is probably worth stuff all, be better looking round for a real cheap
replacement, be the best fix of all and more longer lasting one.

Making the HP recovery disks blows the recovery partition. You can
order a set of proper recovery disks by calling 0800 441147. You used
to be able to order them online, but that service went away, now you
have to talk to some guy in India.

Not so on this poor users HP a210a the recovery partition is teher and intact
in fact if you want to risk it you can reinstall to factory defaut using the
partition, but I am notthat trusting.

The create disks program uses two CD,s an os cd and a programs CD

Not a goer i am afraid, you need the hp OEM version to be able to use the COA
License number, it is unique to HP's OEM copy. Bugger it

Buy a new set of disks, at retail, and send the bill plus your markup to the
individual concerned...

The HP OEM files you need are already contained in the current installed
OS on the HD. Unless it is completely hosed or not there any more, you
can harvest the required HP OEM files and inject them into a Standard
OEM ISO image. Burn to disk and reimage the machine. No issues with
reactivation, but probably some with drivers etc.

The whole process to create the CD (if you have a OEM disk) would not be
more than 20-30 minutes.

The link I gave you above has a .bat file and .vbs file which will get
these files for you automatically.

To repeat: you do not need an original HP OEM CD to do this...

I have created OEM CD's for HP, Compaq, Dell and Acer without any issues.

For backup of the drivers, this program works well for me-

WinDriversBackup
Freeware
Windows 95/98/ME/NT4/2000/XP

WinDriversBackup is a handy tool for backing up your Windows system driver
files. Use this program to find and identify all drivers or optionally
limit it to non-Microsoft drivers and then copy them to a backup directory
of your choice. You can choose to copy all or only selected drivers.
