The first one is the same size as a normal 5.25" external drive bay.
Works nicely so far - I have two. I used to have a couple of those
DSE ones, but the fans in them turned out to be complete crap - they
died after about 2.5 years operation. Maybe that is why they do not
sell them anymore. The rotary fan in the Evercool one is a much
higher spec unit, and very quiet. I am just waiting for my DSE units
in the other PC to crap out now.

Trouble is I have 5 drives in the 5 bays, so the dse units are ideal.

For my new box these might be ideal though

I have one of the DSE ones and would have to second Stephen's comment on the
fans. Mine are still going strong but only because I lubricated then with
some molybdenum grease after they started to make a racket, at about 5
months old.

Actually they're not that efficient IMO. Certainly better than nothing but,
unless you remove the label from your HDD and use a smear of heat-transfer
compound over the whole area (and rub it into the cooler contact surface as
it is quite rough, has coarse machining marks) it's not that great.

If I was only using the one, and being on a budget, that second link from
Ascent looks good. The DSE one was something like $40+ anyway and the
little, fragile filter thingy on the front broke fairly quickly. Also, the
DSE ones are *very* noisy.

The one in the first link looks good, especially if you can stack them and
retain efficiency. I'm not sure what they mean by a "turbo cross-flow fan"
but if it's anything like this:

And if they're stackable without any reduction in efficiency then they would
be great. Shame there isn't a cheaper model though, without the display/fan
speed controller. Just a housing with a fan like the one pictured in the
link would be great. There is anough software to monitor HDD temps without
having to have displays on the front of the case.

Yeah, that's why I said a 'no-frills' version would be good.

Yes, it is a fan design like that. And yes, they do stack just fine.
I have my two stacked, running a 15,000 rpm and a 10,000 rpm SCSI
drive each. Since they are on my OS/2 box, I found having the
temperature readouts good, as the only software I have to read the
temps from the drives themselves is a command line thingie that reads
out raw binary numbers from the IDE interface. When the two DSE units
I have on my Windows box start to go, I would love there to be a
cheaper option for them. I have good software to read out drive temps
under Win2k.
