1/ Migration to Linux only costs money once. Higher Windows TCO is forever.
2/ "Shared source" is a poison pill. Open Source is freedom.
3/ Only the Windows boxes get the worms.

apt or urpmi will take care of the gtk+ libs
I always install both KDE & Gnome desktops,

It's mostly just GTK+ libs that are required.

$ ldd /usr/bin/pan (summarised ...)
libgtkspell, libpspell, libgtk-x11-2, libgdk-x11-2, libatk-1,
libgdk_pixbuf-2, libm, libpangoxft-1, libpangox-1, libpango-1,
libgobject-2, libgmodule-2, libdl, libglib-2, libxml2,
libpthread, libz, libgthread-2, libgnet-2, , libc, libaspell,
libstdc++, libgcc_s, libX11, libpangocairo-1, libcairo,
libXext, libfontconfig, libXcursor, libpangoft2-1, libXft,
libfreetype, libXrender, /lib/ld-linux, libresolv,
libnsl, libpng12, libexpat.

of course YMMV.
