Frustrating Lock ups with Open Office.

Often when I'm trying to type something in either the writer or the
Spreadsheet, Open office will just suddenly lock-up and stop responding and
then a few seconds later almost completely lock up the windows GUI
(everything else in the background is still working away, but just can't
access it or click on anything)

I can access the Task manager and kill any Open Office applications from
there and the windows GUI will unfreeze it self and become a live again.

I have searched to no avail regarding this problem. So far I've updated
Open Office to the latest, installed the lastest Java Runtime and install
the latest nVidia Graphic's drivers, yet the problem still continues to
persist.

Windows 2000 SP4
Intel P4 3.0 w/ hyperthreading.
nVida GeForce FX 5200
1GB DDR400 RAM

Is anyone able to shed any light on this problem?

It is probably something in the formatting of the file you are working
on. I had a Word document that locked up Writer when I loaded it. I
reported the bug on the web site:

http://www.openoffice.org/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=60750

and it looks like they can reproduce the problem and will be fixing it
in 2.0.3. I would suggest that you report your problem too.

Thanks for your reply,

My problems seems to occur at random when I'm in the middle of typing
something and not whilse loading up a document.

I've found in my situation that the freeze can occur even in fresh document
and more annoyingly, it's hard to constantly reliably replicate as there
doesn't seem to be any particular set combinations of keys or commands
specifically which seems to cause this behaviour.

Still scratching my head.

OK, that could be many, many things. For example, does it only happen
on hot days? If so, then it is likely a hardware problem - maybe one
of your PC's fans is dying, or there is insufficient airflow to cool
things in hot weather. I have just had to replace a motherboard chip
fan and two hard disk cooler fans to get rid of annoying system
lockups on one of my PCs. The fans had likely been dead for some
time, but I did not notice until the lockups started in the hot
weather.

Indeed. Hardware-testing times at the moment. I've replaced / repositioned
several fans over the last week or two. I even had a PSU fail yesterday and
wouldn't be surprised if it wasn't due to heat. It was running at the limit,
a 250 watt cheapie running an XP2200+, 512MB RAM, GeForce 5200 and a couple
drives / fans etc. It (the PSU) was hot when the machine stopped working. It
had been intermittantly freezing for a week before that.
