svchost.exe is a generic process which runs services, which can be
anything. Use Process Explorer to see what services are running in that
instance of svchost.exe, then use services.msc to stop/disable this
service (if it is non-essential) and see if that helps.

Yes, umm, you shouldn't do that. (if this is XP, and i'm assuming it is,
Windows File Protection will warn you if there is anything wrong with
system files)
