'Hope someone can help with this as it's starting to get annoying!

I've recently changed from a dial-up to cable modem, and last week
installed a Linksys cable router.

Previously, each machine had a fixed ip in the 192.168.0.xx range,
however I've now changed to using the DHCP server in the router and
while each machine can access the 'net, none of them can see any of the
others, or the network-enabled printer.

To try and sort out the problem, I've limited it to just two boxes, a
w98 and a w2k, without the printer.

This is what is set:

DHCP is enabled on the router.
The same username, with the same password, is logged into both boxes.

The following applies to _both_ machines:
TCP/IP is set to 'Obtain IP address automatically'
Network name is NETWORK1
start\run "\\tower[x]" returns 'The remote computer is not available"

ping 192.168.1.10[z] works ok
ping tower[x] works ok
_but_ Network Neighbourhood shows only the machine it is executed on.
(The [x] represents the _other_ computer, either '3' or '4')
( " [z] " " " " " 100 or 101
Trying to setup a shortcut (Map network drive) returns 'Computer or
sharename cannot be found'

Telnet returns 'Could not open a connection to tower[x]
Computer has both (just in case!) an LMHOSTS and HOSTS file, each
containing the ip and name of the other box

Computer can access the internet via the cable router's WAN connection
Share level access control is enabled
Drive C: is shared

and...

ipcpnfig/all on the W2k box returns:
Windows 2000 IP Configuration Host Name . . . . . . . . . . . : tower4

ipconfig on the w98 box returns:

(MAC number altered on both the above)

The router is at 192.168.1.1

I have to admit, I dont really know what I'm doing here! 'Managed to get
the previous network up and running mainly by trial and error, so I'm
hoping somone here will spot a simple mistake and help me out...

Also, why does ipconfig on the w98 return 'RWC' instead of 'tower3'
which is what's set on the identification tab of network properties?

Thanks, Bob

Are you running a firewall on the computers, and if so have you enabled access
in it for the computers to see each other?

On the original network I was, but now the router is doing it the
firewall has been removed from both.

'Have now found where the 'RWC' was coming from: it was set as the host
name on the DNS configuration tab of the TCP/IP properties (This is the
w98 box).

Changed that to tower3 with no effect.

Possible problem here

Also just run the XP Networking Wizard on both machines.
http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;en-us;283429
I have also seen spyware cause your problem. Corrupted TCP Stacks caused
by malware...
Have you tried using NOT TCP/IP for your file sharing inside your LAN?

http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=316019

Or perhaps Netbui.

Ideas,
Do all PC's have same WORKGROUP name.
In the Local Area Connection settings under Start - Settings
Network Connections - Connection Icon.. Do you
have "File and Printer Sharing" enabled in the list on
both PC's.

If this is all set. Restart both PC's. Access the other
PC via Start Run \\name\ see if it works..

Netbui I'm saving as a last resort! Doesn't it run over TCP/IP
anyway?

>>Also just run the XP Networking Wizard on both machines.

http://support.microsoft.com/d efault.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;2834 29

Hmm, will that work for W98 and W2k as well? If so, I'llgive it a
whirl!

And speaking of corrupted TCP/IP... If I want to totally remove all
traces of networking (in order to start afresh) does it require
physically removing the nic, or can it simply be turned off in device
manager and removing all the protocols etc? The later would be a lot
simpler, but it might leave bits in the registry perhaps.

Thanks Dave.

Yep, unchanged from the original working setup. I'm using the
highly original name of 'NETWORK1'

Yes again. And the C drive of the W98 is shared, along with a couple
of the drives on the W2k box

No good, (have tried this already, in the original post...)
Comes back with 'The network path was not found'

Thanks Bob
