Hi all,

Microsoft run a website for students who are into IT, called
www.thespoke.net. Recently, thespoke and Microsoft ran a competition
called the Imagine Cup. I entered the information technology section,
and did pretty well, coming in the top 300 out of 10000. As a prize,
Microsoft sent me Windows Small Business Server 2003 Premium Edition,
worth about $3000NZ here. So I'd just like to say a big public thank
you to Microsoft for the prize, it's very much so appreciated and I'll
definitely be entering again next year, which is something I highly
recommend for all you students studying IT.

Regards,
Waylon Kenning.

Ahh, but now you'll have to pay $1500 to upgrade it to Windows Small
Business Server 2004 when it comes out in 2006 which fixes *all* of the bugs
and security flaws found in the 2003 edition.

Did you click <I Agree> on the EULA which asks for your first-born son to be
given to Bill Gates?

No no, I've already given away my first born son to eBay as a
promotional stunt, you know how things are these days

Actually, I'm really looking forward to getting stuck into ISA and SQL
server, and Exchange server and finding out how it all works together,
it'll help me out a lot towards studying an MCSE

I still think it's a good idea for companies to be involved with
students studying at polytechs and universities, because being a
student isn't easy, so if a company can make it easier for a student to
study, then those students are likely to be grateful to that company
later on in life, when they're purchasing software, or recommending
software to be purchased etc...

$1500? Nah, thats likely to climb since MS cannot now create the
revenue stream from European software patenting that they were
planning to.

It's not a philanthropic arangement, it's called marketing and helps
maintain monopolistic practices.

Congrats on doing so well but. And scoring the free software.

I understand that you're chuffed but you realise that you've posted thanking
them for getting a very cheap interest in your future? Not only have they
got you working with their software and thinking of recommending it but they
have you thanking them publicly. What a success for Microsoft!

personally i look at another way

microsoft have spent massive amounts of money in marketing certian words,
smart/thick/thin-client, web-services, push technology, .net, dynamic
content, systems architect, active x ... ... the list goes on

point being i habitually abuse microsofts marketing budget for my own
personal gain - so do most developers i know.

its just a part of the software development world - there hardly never is a
'unique idea' we all borrow ideas left right and center to build something
'the right way'.

I'm fully aware of the symbotic nature of the relationship, and
Microsoft spending not much in terms of their total budgets to get a
vested interest in my future, but as a student, this is the first sign
I've seen from any corperation who's willing to give a damn about me,
and reward me for a job well done so it seems.

I'm not stupid, I'm just poor. If corperations are willing to sponsor
students, it's a relationship where everyone wins. The student gets
much needed resources to study, the corperation gets good publicity,
and perhaps a student champion who one day might be the person doing
the purchasing for some company one day.

On another note, a friend of mine working at Raglan Area School
informed me that a student there got the top score in the Microsoft
Office Specialist Exams, and has won a trip to Florida representing New
Zealand in the world Microsoft Office Specialist Championships. So
congrats to that person, and once again thanks to Microsoft for making
things like this happen.
