SANS sent me this link in a newsletter:

I found it an interesting read.

The story is about how a lot of hardware and software was installed to
absorb DDoS attacks, and filter out the legitimate traffic for the intended
recipients. A some stage, chat sites were used to contact the DDoS
perpetrators, and over time, to make them reveal their identity, which made
prosecution possible. It is pointed out that, in the short term, resisting
blackmail is not cost effective.

So why did that take enough words to make half an hour's reading?

Henry

online casino receives a threat to be DDoS'ed
online casino hires a whiz kid to save the day
whiz kid puts on his magic cape and builds a bigger pipe
online casino (and the world) are saved
whiz kid gets the girl

The best way to get the right answer on usenet is to post the wrong one.

thats where I stopped reading...
thats not a fix, merely a work-around for the current attempt, if the
DDOS'ers got a bigger pipe, the casino would be in the same position.

yeah, that and I bet the bill was astronomical
mind you, it does raise an interesting point..
wtf are admins supposed to do with DDoS attacks/threats
it seems from the article everyone coughs up (which means some smart arse
will make a lot of money just by saying he can do it
if a _really_ big pipe is built to handle these attacks from the botnets
(apparently there is a competition to see who can build the biggest
network) that will still leave a routing problem
maybe its an ad for a big pipe thats available if you get threatened
(available at 75% of the extortion rate
