Well, the Apple iPod <http://www.apple.co.nz/ipod> can play MP3s
(amongst other formats), store thousands of them at high bitrates, has a
fantastic user interface and a great application to organise your MP3s
from on your PC and then sync those playlists to your iPod - namely
iTunes.

OTOH you can get any number of dirt cheap Flash based MP3 players from
just about anywhere. Just don't expect a world class interface or speedy
data transfers.

So you get what you pay for as with most things in life.

Pardon me, but when did Will _ever_ mention prices in his original post?
What Will _did_ say was:

That was what he apparently carded about, not cost. So why don't _you_
get a bloody clue yourself before you start flaming people who have made
a perfectly nice and on-topic response. If you've got some kind of weird
anti-Apple computer thing I could give a ****. Get over it.

The Apple iPod is the leading MP3 player in the world today - bar none,
so I think it's a fair suggestion.

Sheesh...

Well seeing the original poster didn't specify that it needed to be
small, who cares ?

They just wanted a mp3 player, not a thread hijack.

Got conned again lately ?

I've held bigger packs of cards, and the iPod mini (if you like really
small gadgets) is truly tiny, thin, beautiful and highly functional. But
maybe a tad too small for someone like myself who loses small things all
the time (but that's a problem with any tiny digital device) I
prefer the slightly bigger iPod to the mini. The U2 special edition iPod
looks beautiful.

But as I said, any iPod will be far more expensive than a small memory
stick MP3 player, but the interface and method of transferring songs and
organising them is generally dreadful for most flash players (sorry -
but iTunes for PC is just great and so easy) - anyone feel free to leap
in here if you've found a flash player with a decent interface. It's
just that I haven't so far.

'cause for me, anyway, it's the interface and storage space (to a lesser
extent) that makes the MP3 player. If it takes ages to sync my playlists
to my player, or setting up those playlists in the first place is a PITA
- then it's a lost cause IMHO. A player that cannot hold enough music is
no damn good either. I don't want to be having to go back to my computer
every day just to get a new selection. I want to be able to travel for a
few days - even a week - and not have to listen to repeats.

Anyway, that's all just my opinion. No need to get all worked up about
it

Jamie Kahn Genet

P.S. Totally unrelated - anyone else excited about the upcoming Nintendo
Duel Screen? Is it even on the radar here in NZ?

The Adata can use a 2gig SD Card..

But what about the software used to create and transfer playlists to the
Player? What is the user interface like?

Not enough to hold much music, at least at 128k encoding, though I
prefer 192 or lossless encoding. 128 seems to remove something important
- I can't quite put my finger on it. It's funny, I usually have lousy
hearing.

Anyway, it's not enough for a weekend away unless you're listening to a
downsampled audiobook or something voice only where a very low bit rate
won't matter much. Sorry - 10GB or bust for me, at least. YMMV of
course.

Well, I still reckon a HD based player is the way to go nowadays. Not to
say once flash drives get cheaper at multi-gigabyte sizes I won't switch
to them. I'd definitely prefer a solid state player if only it had
enough storage. Much more rugged.
