CD Burner crashes PC

Hi again, this is a problem that kicked in a few weeks ago without
warning. For some reason when I burn a CD with Nero my PC crashes and
reboots itself, ruining the disk in the drive. After a reboot Nero burns
without a problem. Sometimes the disk will get up to 60% burnt when the
system crashes, but other times it doesn't even get the burn started.

I've uninstalled my old version of Nero and reinstalled a new version -
6.3.0 but the same problem persists.

Before I burn heaps of expensive shiny coasters I don't need, does this
ring any bells to anyone as being something obviously easy to fix? Or
should I just try uninstalling various applications to see whether a
clash of software might be troubling my CD burner?

The CD drive works fine in every other way.

Thanks in advance for any suggested fixes.

B

Thanks for your reply. How could 4 gigs in one partition, 5 in another
and 70 in another still be insufficient disk space? Plus 1 gig of ram.

Depends on where Nero puts its temp files and it likes contiguous file
space for them as well so if the drive it uses is fragmented and showing
lots of free space it might not be contiguous.
But that is only one possible cause, nero is a very forgiving program so
I am supprised to hear it has burped on you.

Wont solve your problem but may help diagnose it.
There is a setting in XP (assuming XP) to automatically reboot instead of
blu screen of death, if you get a blue screen the information may give you
something to go from.

Possibly system shutting down / rebooting because of CPU overheating. It is the
time of year for it. Check CPU temperature and BIOS setting for protection
temperature, and make sure it is set correctly for the CPU. If so, possible
fix is to clean CPU heat sink / fan etc.

Thanks for the suggestion. Sadly it's Win 2000. Looks like I'll be using
lots of disks ...

Thanks for the suggestion. The CPU and therefore fan is very new, but
I'll talk to the guy who built it and see what he says.
Cheers,
B

Power supply sufficient? What rating is your PSU and what other
hardware do you have?

Update the drivers for the IDE controller that the dvd burner is attached to.
