I'm interested in software for erasing some old tapes at work - has anyone
else had the need to secure erase DLT's and found a software solution?

Cheers,
Mark

Okay lets define Secure here.
Do you mean
State Secrets Secure
Fortune 500 Secure
Corporate Secure
Small Business Secure
Home User secure

The first three "Physical destruction of the Media" end of story
The others wipe and wipe again using the tape utilities provided, the
data is not worth the effort to recover it.

Now what category do you fit in, by the fact that you would consider
software wipe of data for security you sure are not a part of any of the
first three.

Basically, if you overwrite the tape then getting information back is going
to be tricky without spending a lot on DLT data recovery specialists. I
would prefer something that goes a few steps further and can be set to do
more than one pass and some randomisation of the pattern. Nothing over the
top though, we're not talking state secrets here

Sounds like two or three passes of the secure erase routine from your
backup software should do the trick.

....unfortunately, once you've removed the header info off the tape,
they're really not too much use.

So, if you don't intend using them again, then bulk eraser's fine.

I do intend to use Windows backup if no one else has a better
recommendation, just wanting something that has a bit more control of
settings

Cheers,
Mark

Marginally better than nothing.
Take a look at http://www.novastor.com/
They have trial versions.
For a bare bones to tape, look at http://www.snapback.com/downloads.php
