Hi

I am a web designer who interacts with plenty of people who need URL. As we
all know it cost something like $20.00 to $80.00 to house a web and have
your URL pointed to your site. As well all also know someone making a
killing charging this. To help my clients save I am thinking of getting a
computer connected to the back bone. And then pointing my clients URLS to my
computer.

How do I do this?

And what sort of programs do I need to do all this pointing a Web housing?

Cheers Peter...

P.S. Im new to all this so please forgive an error..

If they are already your clients, I recommend trying to hold on to them by
offering superior service and support rather than trying to undercut the
competition. In the web hosting industry there will always be someone
offering hosting for less than you can.

Easily. Just get yourself a permanent connection (if you ask ihug or any of
the other big isps they will be able to help you out) and a decent server.
If you are talking about telehousing (it is unclear from your post) instead
of doing everything yourself then most isps will be able to help you with
that too .

> And what sort of programs do I need to do all this pointing a Web housing?

Linux or BSD. Most distributions of either come with all the software you
will need to do pretty much anything related to hosting web sites. If you
have not used either before then I recommend that you hire someone at least
to do the initial setup since you will very quickly lose customers if things
do not work correctly.

If you're totally new to hosting sites on a server then it's probably better
to let experienced people manage your hosting for you to ensure you have a
machine that's up 24x7 and not vulnerable to security attacks, and that has
a help desk that's available should anything go wrong.

If you're trying to cut down on the cost then there are several alternatives
where you lease a dedicated server which is managed by the hosting company
for you, or use a plan like that offered by Web Drive
http://www.webdrive.co.nz/pricing.php where you pay a base rate then a rate
per additional site and can onbill your customers however you see fit. They
have two plans 1) $30 per month for one site + $8 per month per additional
site, or 2) $60 per month for one site + $4 per month per additional site.

(I don't work for Web Drive, by the way, but I recently sold a web hosting
business to them, and they are excellent web hosting providers).

There are many companies in NZ, US and worldwide who offer excellent prices
on managed and dedicated servers. Type dedicated servers into Google and
you'll get a whole bunch of them.

This is gonna make me sound like an arse... but if you dont know, you
shouldn't be doing it as a business.

practically any Linux distro will do it out of the box.

Yeah, just make sure that they aren't hosting stuff using ADSL!

Cheers,

Cliff

Development: Yes
Production: No

In my experience, being the one-stop shop means being the single point
of failure too. If you're happy to get a call at 2am because your
server has died, then by all means, host it yourself.

You will also be responsible for maintaining the box and making sure
it doesn't get Slashdotted etc etc - that means security, both
physical and virtual.

Choosing a specialist hosting company means someone else looks after
all this and you can sleep easy at night. If I were you, I'd look at
the web hosters around NZ and see what reseller deals they have.

Or offer telehousing for your customers.

If you're in a major metropolitan CBD, you could get flat-rate ADSL from
TelstraClear. I have a client in Hamilton running exactly that.
