So how do these cheapie PC's at The Warehouse stack up? Has anyone bought
one as a spare PC or whatever? I was put off by it being only a Celeron
Processor, but how would it fare if it were only used for simple web, email,
etc?

Also, how is Dell Online, anyone ordered that way before and can recommend
or not recommend?

Any modern PC can do that much. My friend has the 2.2GHz version of
the Dell advertised at www.thewarehouse.co.nz. It has a 400MHz FSB and
I especially noticed how lousy the performance was when loading apps and
installing software. It uses the Intel 845GL chipset for graphics
rendering, has
three PCI slots and ~NO~ ~AGP~ ~PORT~. The HDD is an Hitachi 41.1GB
UDMA/100 7200RPM. She uses the PC for internet related stuff most of the
time, so the lack of performance is not a problem.

I built a PC based on a K6-2/550 with 256megs of RAM and 98SE that
would do all that without breaking into a sweat.

That's what I have heard (about the service). I think I'm going to forget
about Dell. Assuming I am buying from a "regular" retailer like Harvey
Norman or Noel Leeming, which of these brands are dodgy in your opinion:

Acer
Packard Bell
HP
Compaq

They all are, at the low end.

You're much much better off paying someone local $100 to build you a
computer from the major components (case/power supply, motherbard, CPU,
RAM, disks).

ASUS and a few others that make quality ATX motherbords are a far better
"name brand" than HP or Compaq or Dell when it comes to low end
computers.

Acer's probably the best bet out of that bunch - at least they use
reasonable hard drives, and standard componentry.

However, why are you looking only at the big retailers? Try someone
local - tell us what town you're in, and I'm sure people here will say
who the good ones are, so you can avoid the sharks!

You'll generally get a better machine for not much more. The extra
spent will be on good componentry, and will give you better
performance overall.

I have a Celeron 900 with 384MB on a BX board (but with ATA100 IDE), a
7,200rpm ATA133 system HDD and a GF2 and, other than for demanding games,
I'll bet most people wouldn't know it wasn't a lot more modern. It's *very*
responsive, it's even running XP fine.

Mind you, those coppermine Celerons were good value, better Mhz-for-Mhz than
P4-based Celerons which have to be the worst since the cache-less Celerons
that started the name.

I think you should forget the whole idea. It'll be at least another 10
years before home computers ever have enough power to send emails like in
the movies which are set in the future.
It's only been 2 years since one could get and use a colour monitor on a
computer.
