Are there any NZ based irc server these days? There used to be an Akl
based Undereet one a while back. I want to run some social network
tools on one for a couple of days BUT do not want to have to fork out
too much $$ for the traffic.

cheers

Nope... too many DDoS attacks were launched at the NZ Undernet server, so
nobody wanted to host it

There are plenty of IRC servers in Australia. Does that mean that Aussies are
less malicious - or just better at securing their systems than kiwis?

lol - didn't bother to check that. Better than running it on a dialup account
tho' It might do the trick for William, but maybe not if he is already
worried about traffic volume...

I found it via a list at http://www.moonbeam.co.za/irclist.htm
The only other NZ servers I could find listed there don't seem to be around any
more. Strongnet used to run one after xtra closed their irc server (which was a
shame IMO), but that seems to have vanished. Ausnet have a request on their web
page for interest in a NZ based server.

Huge attacks forced the NZ server to close. While in the US bandwidth is
cheap, here we pay large amounts for volume from the US, so the costs
just got silly and the ISP just had enough.

Unless its someone large like Clear or Xtra, (neither of which I suspect
care beacause irc is not a MS "thing" and no money in it) to take the
brunt and I dont us getting one, I think we are out of luck.

In saying that having 1 this side of the pacific was a disadvantage,
most US and EU servers refused access insisting we use the NZ one, and
the admins who ran the NZ I found were somewhat anal....

Thanks all for the comments. I thought the situation was as it is. I
have just thrown the app on one of our servers and will just take the
hit in my pocket The joy of university study and needing data.

thanks
