The Patriot missile was built to defend a site from aircraft. It goes and
chases them.

If one has ones own aircraft in the area then hold the patiots, as your
aircraft are chasiong the enemy ones and they have weapons to down the
siad enemy aircraft.

Friendlies have transponders to ID themselves as friendlies.

The plane which got shot down had a faulty transponder and shouldn't have
been in the air.
