VPN Providers

Hi

We currently have a dedicated frame relay between Auckland and Wellington. I
would like to see if a dedicated VPN would work for us and if it is a
cheaper option.

Our jetstream connection comes into our Auckland office and is routed to
Wellington through a Linux pc which allows our Wellington branch to access
email and the net. Mdaemon runs on our WinNT server and collects our mail
from our isp and distributes.

Our application and server access is over the frame relay.

As I understand it for a vpn to work I need to setup a separate jetstream
connection in our Wellington branch, get a fixed ip on the server and away
we go.

My concern is we suffer a lot of micro outages from our current js
connection. Quite common for us to need to reset our router in the morning
and after the weekend.

How secure is a vpn? what firewall provisions do we need to put in place?

Woosh is not an option because no coverage in Wgtn for our office there.

Can anyone recommend a firm that specialises in vpn setup and can keep the
explanation simple and willing to make an onsite appraisal? preferably with
a contact in Wellington who can handle the install that end.

Still waiting to hear from Telecom's 'Office Connect'.

While resetting the router isn't a common problem for us, outages are.
In addition to micro-outages, in recent times we have had at least two
whole days without ADSL access in Auckland due to line problems and
Telecom stupidity. "Best effort" is really "We'll fix it when we get
around to it".

Right now, we are having small outages for a period of a few minutes at
a time, probably due to the bad weather (Yes, weather is a common
problem with ADSL).

So, my advise is, stick with frame relay. Actually, go one step further
and replace your ADSL Internet connection with a second frame relay
connection.

Woosh could be an option for the Auckland office, no need to have the
same type of connection in both places...

Would citylink be an option ?
http://www.citylink.co.nz/
http://www.citylink.co.nz/services/hardware/router.html
They supply connections in Auckland and Wellington CBD
Asterisk do VPN according to their page
http://www.asterisk.co.nz/vpn.php
I have no connection to either except as a citylink user..

If you're technically inclined, OpenVPN is an excellent GPL'd VPN app.
Very configurable, uses SSL encryption and works like a charm. I use it
for all manner of remote access and with a fast connection you can
browse server shares etc.

AT&T - offices in Auckland and Wellington. They have a VPN offering
that is basically plug & play.

You haven't told us what speed the frame runs at.

You haven't told us where you're located.

CityLink would be worth talking to.

Providing you can get a good stable net connection then VPN is very good.

I never have any real problems with ADSL but you do need to look at what
data rate you're getting on your link. If you're to far away from an
exchange then you're going to get a slower speed.

You also need to look at how the router is wired in. I set up a site
recently and discovered there's more than one way of doing things wrong

There's going to be more and more FUD around ADSL as more and more
businesses wake up and realise what they can do with it.

While the Business JetStream may not come with an SLA you can still
expect a level of service.

Give consideration to Telecoms stated direction at present - hint.

Cheers Don

Well, that's Auckland for you. Like someone else says, use something
else in Auckland. Talk to CityLink. They are good value.

Cheers,

Cliff

Our travel agency deals with Millennium Computer Services in Wellington. We
use Mdaemon for email and have a Nortel box which provides a VPN to Denver.
(04)473 5822 although we use an 0800 number to contact them but I don't want
to put that number in a news group.

I bags a commission
