Warning for anyone running AVG.....

AVG does NOT appear to kill/stop mydoom.

Ive got latest def files etc for it and what do you know... MyDoom still
infected my system and AVG wouldnt do a damn thing to stop it. Wouldnt even
move it to the virus vault.
Ill be reviewing my choice of AV program now....

Thank you Symantec for your removal tools....

It certainly does stop some variations of Mydoom. Which variant did you
open?

So you opened an attachment from a presumably unknown person, and you
got infected...

and this is somehow your AV fault?

Surely not opening dodgy attachments will kill/stop mydoom.

Did you get it by accident or did you like one of the screen savers
provided in the e-mail. LOL.

Oh and then people on other threads start going on about how AVG is so much
better and Nortons is the devil incarnate! Of course it's just their own
personal perception (probably tainted by
big-business-versus-the-honest-little-guy viewpoint), but it really annoys
me how people slag Nortons yet it's the Nortons users who are the happiest
people of them all, and never actually get a virus. That's because:

1- they have auto-protect on (if it slows down your pc, then you are
probably suffering from the pc equivalent of hypochondria! - alternatively,
get a new pc!!)
and

2 - Symantec Live Update is always on the ball quick as a flash, so we
never need to worry about such things as mydoom etc. The people who don't
use Nortons are the paranoid ones whom don't bother to open any email
attachments and they're also probably too scared to go to the loo in case a
cheekie darkie from the abyss leaps out and throws mud at them!

Heaven bless Symantec. Nortons is the best.

Yep, quite right.

AVG is better than nothing, but like it or not, Norton have millions
to invest in making sure they are the first out with definitions.

AVG is suited for those that don't want to invest in protecting their
PC, and in that regard, it's a hell of a lot better than nothing.

However, it's free, and as the old saying goes - "you pay for what you
get".

Really? I found a new virus last year, sent it to AVG and Symantec.
AVG said it would be covered in their next update but it was a few
weeks before Nortons detected it. In fact the first response I got
from them about it was that they didn't find any malicious code in it!
By putting it through SuperSnooper I could see the malicious code
plainly.

Different AV progs perform differently on different viruses. Which is
why some recommend the use of more than one AV prog.

Too right. I have Norton AV installed and running and updated, but
McAffee online scan found a virus on my c drive that Norton never
spotted (it was sitting in an attached file in the Pegasus mail
database; even so...) What's more, it was years old (in terms of
written), not a brand new one..
