say you had a 64bit PCI-X GBe card, plugged into a 32bit PCI
motherboard. would such a PC experience any major lag on a GBe
network...? i can't remember the max tranfser rate of a PCI bus... but
GBe is in theory 125MB/s....?

major bottlenecks will be
a) whether your card can successfully negotiate speed/duplex with your
hub/switch or other devices,
b) are your cables Gb clean, old kinked walked-on Cat5 just doesn't cut
it...
