I have an aquaintence who will be traveling to Venice from May to June and
needs to know if she needs any special cables and/or adapters to connect to the Internet. She is checking out dial-up and WiFi connections but is getting mixed answers on whether or not she needs anything special in Europe, besides an AC adapter. Now, I'm almost positive that she doesn't need anything special to connect to the Internet via dial-up or WiFi, but since I have never traveled to Europe w/ my laptop, I would like a second opinion before I answer her. Thanks in advance. -Christopher Isherwood =?Utf-8?B?Q2hyaXN0b3BoZXIgSXNoZXJ3b29k?= |

If she can find wifi hotspots around, there shouldnt be any problem. But I
dont know about the availablity of wifi in italy! Even though I've seen comercials where people have their wireless computer and they can connect anywhere, like at stonehenge... yeah right... only if there is a wifi hotspot available, or if they have a satelite internet connection (i've only heard about this kind of service... mobile satelite, or something like that. It isnt cheap, and who knows if you could "see" a satelite available in other countries than the US.) If she's looking at dialup... She could be at a loss there. Mainly because I think phone connectors are different. She should look into a phone line converter for the specifide country. She should check with her service provider for the dialup... if she plans on connecting to an american service long distance, hah, good luck! And she'd be wasting minutes on a calling card. If it's AOL for example, I know AOL has service in different countries, and she may just need to find the local numbers. But that's all I know. Wi-Fi worked fine at the hotel where I stayed in Venice last Nov. Just
needed a credit card. It was about 5 Euros for an hour I think. (they had day plans too) There are several free hotspots in Venice, but I did not want to carry my computer around everywhere! By the way, I used Skype to call home and it worked great! Did not use dialup.... Just to add to the discussion have your friend make sure her laptop power
adapter is rated for 110-240 Volts and 50-60 Hz. If it is she is good to go except for the physical power plug. She may need an adapter. She should be able to purchase the appropriate adapters at any travel type store or Radio Shack... http://kropla.com/electric2.htm -- Al Jarvi (MS-MVP Windows Networking) Please post *ALL* questions and replies to the news group for the mutual benefit of all of us...
