Hello,
I am trying to network my laptop w/XP Home to my wifes computer w/XP Pro. We are using a wireless connection and she can connect to me, but when I try to connect to her I get a acess denied message. She is using FAT 32 and I am using NTFS. Does she have to use NTFS too? Thanks, Richard =?Utf-8?B?cmxvZ2Fu?= |

Here are some suggestions: 1. First, make sure you don't have a firewall blocking the local area network (lan). XPSP2 enables the Windows Firewall. If you aren't running a third-party firewall or have an antivirus with "Internet Worm Protection" (like Norton 2005/06) which acts as a firewall, then you're fine if you've checked "File & Printer Sharing on the Exceptions tab. If you have third-party firewall software, configure it to allow the lan traffic as trusted. I usually do this with my firewalls with an IP range. Ex. would be 192.168.1.0-192.168.1.254. Obviously you would substitute your correct subnet. 2. Create identical usernames/passwords on both computers. Do not use blank passwords. You can always set the computers to automatically log onto one account if you want that convenience. See: Configure Windows to Automatically Login (MVP Ramesh) - http://windowsxp.mvps.org/Autologon.htm 3. Create shares as desired. If you still have problems, here is an excellent network troubleshooter by MVP Hans-Georg Michna. Take the time to go through it and it will usually pinpoint the problem area(s) - http://winhlp.com/wxnet.htm Malke -- MS-MVP Windows User/Shell Elephant Boy Computers www.elephantboycomputers.com "Don't Panic" Malke |

Hi Malke,
Checked all that you had sugested and went to the link you gave me -all to no avail. Have you any other ideas. Are you sure that my wifes xp-pro machine doesnt have to run NTFS instead of FAT-32 ? I am quite sure. My lan includes boxen running SuSE 9.3 (Linux - a laptop and a desktop), three XP Pro machines, one XP Home machine, a Win98SE machine, and a Windows 2000 machine. The network has also had at times a Win95 box and a Mac OSX iMac. Every time you download a file or look at a webpage, you are transferring data from a machine that is most probably running a Unix or Linux operating system. You've got something set wrong. Unless you take the time to go through Mr. Michna's troubleshooter carefully, it can't help you. I have no idea what you've done wrong but I assure you that the file systems have nothing to do with it. It most likely is a misconfigured firewall or a user/password problem. XP Home only authenticates as guest which can be disabled in Pro (Simple Sharing); however, even if Simple Sharing is disabled, creating identical user accounts allows authentication. Here are a few additional links. If you still can't figure it out, then consider having a professional come take a look. http://www.practicallynetworked.com/...ilesharing.htm (Home) http://www.practicallynetworked.com/...ring/index.htm (Pro) http://www.practicallynetworked.com/...hoot_index.htm Malke -- MS-MVP Windows User/Shell Elephant Boy Computers www.elephantboycomputers.com "Don't Panic" Malke |
