The answer to both is that its been there for a while.

Heres a howto
http://www.roninsoftwaregroup.com/mysql/ooo.htm
Open office works as a front end to different types of database.
Some like mysql are free and have been around longer than openoffice.

Nor is MS SQL server. Your point being?

There _is_ a ODBC interface for postgreSQL

Mysql is available for Windows 95
Openoffice has a datasource architecture which works with several
databases.

Not much point suggesting Postgresql as open source replacement for MS
Access

Access is a spreadsheet, not a database. There are plenty of *nix
spreadsheets and you were talking about using access as a database
frontend.

The ODBC interface allows w9* to trivially talk to postgresql, oracle or
mysql on a *nix server and in a complete *nix environment there are better
ways of doing it anyway.
