Even if they provided the same plans as available in Aussie we would be happier

You don't need to be communist or a hippie to know when you're being
ripped off.

I've sat at business meetings where senior execs of NZ telcos have
admitted that it only costs a couple hundred dollars to haul 2Mb/s from
Auckland to Wellington, but they WILL NOT offer it at those rates because
1: it would spark a price war of ungodly proportions 2: Would cause
commerce commission enquiries about why the proces were so high for so
long and (most importantly) 3: If they did, Telecom would simply cut their
voice interconnects and refuse to restore them.

Does anyone else find it a little strange that traces to the Telecom
subsidiaries in Australia from outside NZ tend to go via NZ?

Especially given those pricing differentials....

Telecom charges what it charges BECAUSE IT CAN. What it charges has little
to do with real world costs and far more to do with what won't gut its DDS
market.

BTW, if you think the charges on the customer side are obscene, you should
see what they charge ISPs to interconnect to the ADSL network. It's
significantly higher than Clear (for instance) sells international
bandwidth for...

That's true, but I do think they should be using some kiwi logic in
designing original plans and systems. Why cant the telco's make it so that
when your 10G limit is reached the line speed (On international traffic) is
dropped back to the dialup speeds of 56k an have no extra traffic cost,
just like all the flatrate dialup people use.

Well I don't think they would do that because they would loses they great
money making opportunity of people running over there limit and they
already think that its already got good consumer value as it is. Pithy
they can't just make it great though..

Don't think there were many hippies in the USSR. Or North Korea. Or
China.

I think they can get pretty close though, and certainly duplicate the
australian system.

After all, Australia has thousands of miles of desert and coastline to
cover. And they manage.

No Nathan, the reason we do not have a more competitive dsl system
here in NZ is purely down to the monopoly telecom has with the local
loop, and their agressive arrogance.

If NZ were to elect me prime minister, I would regulate them. And that
goes for any monopoly - natural or not - they'd be regulated. And your
paymasters would be on that list too Nathan.

A market economy only works with robust competition. In the absense of
that competition, there is no alternative but regulation.

Yes, but that ocean is only 1/3-1/4 (or less) of the wholesale delivered
price.

AT&T are rumoured to be offering some very interesting deals for
delivering into Auckland as long as TelecomNZ is kept out of the equation.

NDAs apply.

Even Telecom's best deal at the moment is till too expensive for what is
being offered.

Dry crumbs thrown down from the table IMHO.

Telecom is still exploiting it's broadband monopoly by not actually
providing affordable broadband access like what is available in the USA.
