Either of those could have done it.

One option is to sign up for an email account at spamcop
http://www.spamcop.net.
Spamcop also does accurate tracking of message source, as "who is this"
showed you, and therefore have a good basis for providing accurate
filtering. Recently they added further filtering in the form of
"SpamAssassin" and also blacklists for various spam sources - such as
Korea.
From the options page:
Blacklists
Block All: This option allows you to block email from anyone not on your
whitelist. This will stop essentially all spam, but will also stop all
valid email unless the sender is in your whitelist.
Block All
Tag Only: This option allows you to only tag spam in the headers of the
email. No mail will be blocked, but you can use your email client or
server to filter the email yourself.
Tag Only
SpamAssassin: SpamAssassin checks your incoming mail against a variety
of rules and assigns a spam score. The higher the score, the more likely
it is that this email is spam. This option is recommended, as it can
help block the few spams that the SpamCop blacklist won't block. Start
with a score of 5 and adjust up or down as needed. A lower score will
catch more spam, but will catch a few more legit emails.
SpamAssassin SpamAssassin Limit
DNS Blacklists: Select the DNS Zone blacklists you want to use. DNS
blacklists are used by SpamCop to identify possible spamming IP
addresses or misconfigured mail relays. Only the SpamCop blacklist is
run by SpamCop. All others are run by independent third parties with no
connection to SpamCop and have their own criteria for who to list. The
default selection is to query only the SpamCop list. To potentially stop
even more spam, try one or more of the other lists. The more lists you
use, the higher the potential that legitimate email will be blocked.
