Dodgy USB Stick Handling

(XP X64, all patches)

I have a number of USB sticks that work fine and a few that work fine
on X32 but not on X64.

Device manager assigns a drive letter and I can operate on the USB
using line mode in a command window
(Isn't DOS wonderful!).

In the GUI world the drive does not show in My Computer or anywhere
else, except device manager as a disk, as it should.

Event Viewer has an error 111 which MS Help indicates is a a problem
with the device, not XP, but 32 bit versions of XP are happy with the
device. Any idea where I might look for the disconnect between device
management and the GUI? The problem sticks are by multiple USB
vendors.

Thanks

CF
