TROUBLESHOOTING A WIRELESS NETWORKING CONNNECTION BETWEEN A NOTEBOOK OR
LAPTOP AND A DESKTOP COMPUTER.
Despite doing everything according to the book (and Microsoft has an
excellent article on setting up a wireless connection at
http://tinyurl.com/pxd82 )
you may find that you still can't get a notebook or laptop to
communicate wirelessly with a desktop pc.
When you have tried all else - or preferably before you even begin
- make sure that the "Peer-to-Peer Networking" component is
loaded in the Control Panel/Add or Remove Programs/Add a Windows
Component section.
Without this component it will be impossible to wirelessly connect
computers.
Then remove the wireless SSID from the client computer (the only which
is not acting as the host computer from which the network was
originally initiated).
Note: windows wireless zero configuration utility may be turned on as
well as the network adapter's configuration utility. Turning on
Microsoft's utility to wirelessly control a network will not actually
override or replace any SSID settings previously set up under the
network card's utility!
So REMOVE any previous network set up using the network card's
utility, THEN add the network again to correspond to the proper
settings set up on the host computer.
Finally note that the connection must be initiated from the host
computer because it is the host computer that will set the IP address
for the client computer, and not the other way around.
